'Two theatre designers, Eleanor and Laura, will create a live drawing inspired by theatre maker Edith Craig, that celebrates all the incredible achievements of women past and present.
They want you to join in, celebrate the women who have influenced and inspired you by adding to this enormous drawing which will grow throughout the Festival and create a tribute to the extraordinary work done by many women.
From the designers, Eleanor and Laura:
"The idea began with a desire to celebrate Edith Craig and her diverse and prolific practice in theatre as a designer, director, costumier, actor and company founder as well as her work as an activist in the Suffrage movement. She is little known compared to her brother, renowned theatre director/designer Edward Gordon Craig, and famous mother, Ellen Terry."
Pageant on Paper is specifically inspired by Edith’s direction of the suffrage play by Cicely Hamilton, Pageant of Great Women which toured the country and, as theatre still strives to do today, took an important message to new and diverse audiences.
Pageant on Paper is a piece of re-remembering; in 1913 Edith and Cicely remembered the women of the past who had been forgotten.
In Eleanor's and Laura's own word "now we seek to raise them up again, adding to their number their contemporaries, our heroes and yours too. You bring the women, we will supply the drawing tools and any assistance required!"
